Fix Recut Crashing (Not Opening) on Windows

When you try to launch Recut, if it immediately closes – maybe you see a flash of the window, or maybe not – try these troubleshooting tips.

  1. Some customers with this problem have fixed it by reinstalling or updating their graphics drivers. I'm not sure why this works (or why it causes a crash, as I haven't been able to reproduce it), but it's worth a try for sure. Even if you're already at the latest driver version, try uninstalling and reinstalling them. And then reboot your computer to make sure everything is settled.

Why do you need to reboot after installing some things, even though everything seems to work fine?

Sometimes an installation needs to replace existing files. If those files are currently in use, Windows won't allow overwriting them. Instead, it puts the new files in a kind of "holding area". After you restart the computer, while those files are briefly not in use, it copies the new ones into place.

  1. Try rebooting your computer, even if you haven't just installed graphics drivers :) Sometimes things get into a weird state and a reboot can fix it.

  2. Recut relies on Microsoft Edge WebView2. If you've done some tidying and erased this (which might also happen if you uninstall the Edge browser), Recut won't be able to work. You can download WebView2 from Microsoft.

  3. If you have Windows N, Recut requires that the Media Feature Pack is installed, and you can download that from Microsoft here.

  4. Sometimes older versions can conflict with newer ones, and you'll get an error about needing WebView2 even though it's already installed. So if nothing above has worked, try this: open an Explorer window and find C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\co.tinywins.recut, and delete the co.tinywins.recut folder. Important to note: AppData is a hidden folder so you probably have to turn on "Show hidden files and folders" if you don't see it under your account folder.

If you've tried all that and Recut is still failing to open, head to our Support page and get in touch and we'll try to figure out what's going on!
